live gameplay demo

Post by Nagash »

here's one live gameplay demo that focus's on a Char Warrior

in it you can see a massive battle versus some kind of crystalised dragon type creature. There may be sound and commentary on the video, but i can't hear it as i don't have sound at work, but looks like a kewl battle.

something else i noticed in the video that I haven't seen talked about in any interviews or blogs or anything like that is the Map Traveling. The thing i love about GW and hate about 99.9% of other MMORPG's is the map traveling systems they have. For me it can make or break the gameplay experience, as you don't wanna have to fight your way to some location just so you can travel to another location and shell out some cash. With Guild Wars it's like... unlock a location and go there whenever you like, which i feel really helps the community atmosphere of the game itself, as it centralises locations for people to gather, as when they wanna idle, they can go to their favourite location instantly, and it makes it look like a big active city... even if it's full of people dancing randomly in the streets to no music :D

main thing i worried about this game was the lack of this system, as in GW1 it was mainly there because the whole thing was instanced, so going to a city was just like unlocking a new level in the game and loading up that save point, whereas in GW2 it's a persistant world where everything is active and so may have been setup with a "flight master" type system :(

I seen a better video of the fight with this dragon again played by the staff, it shows alot more of the area and a little encampment up on the hill were there are mortar type weapons which any player can use to fight the dragon, there are lots of things in the enviroment that u can make use of which sounds cool. And a chest spawns after you kill it with some loot !

I think i read somewere that there would be a small fee in gold to map travel to diffrent waypoints, lets hope it's not a stupid amount of cash.
Need to win lotto to support booze habit!

i wouldn't mind a small fee if it was aimed at doing some ingame commerce type thing, like what they brought in with res selling etc. like maybe it's more expensive to go to the more popular places, and the more people put in to travel there, the more vibrant the city is, or quicker it rebuilds after an attack, etc. Something so it looks like the money gets used, and at the same time, encourages people to idle elsewhere :)

so long as it's the same interface where you just open up the map, click where u wanna go, confirmation click, done.... then i'm happy with that system. I just don't want a system where if you wanna meet up with people, you have to travel half way across the world while fighting your way to the flight place, only to dicover that the people u wanna meet up with are half way across the world when you get there and you have to fight your way there also... by the time you've done that your done for the night.

They seem to be warping in the vid, just like GW.

I agree with you Nagash, It used to piss me off big time having to travel around WoW, especially for daily quests etc.
Has there been any talk of mounts in GW2?

i think the warping is just cos of the video, or maybe their net code isn't completely done yet, but in GW i never had warping issues unless u count the time i used to play on wireless :D

i've not heard anything about mounts, but mounts in other games really are to solve the issue of long walks through the world between locations, and with map travels it's not really needed, same as within GW. Though mounts are also just something that players like i suppose.

i don't really think mounts would work in GW2 though. for human sized characters it would be kewl, but for the Char... it would look stupid imo, and would be better having a speedup type game mechanic, cos they are dog like and could run faster on all fours? But then char players would want actual mounts and cry about it and rage, then the dev's would feel a need to put some random beast as their mount in place of a horse, and it'll look weird. But then you also will have the Norn, who'll look weird on a horse and wouldn't make sense for them to be on a horse in terms of backstory, would make more sense for them to turn into a horse... which again would be weird, mainly cos they are mountain based, so a mountain goat would make more sense... and then it starts getting stupid again.

I think there is technically 1 mount type though, and thats the Asura's robots. In a gameplay preview video, it shows one jumping out of a robot after battle. This is probably meant to be just armour, but i suppose technically it's a mount... it might not give a speed boost, but who knows.

Ah sorry my bad. By warping I meant map travel. Wrong terminology there :)

yeah looks like it'll work the same way to me, though the outside world now looks to me like the standard instanced areas, maybe just bigger areas. like this articles gone up.... http://www.arena.net/blog/gaming-outsid ... experience

in it it tell u about ipod and ipad stuff you can do, which tbh, sounds pretty awesome, though i'd never use it myself. basically you can track people in the game world and see where they are... and says you can see teleport locations... like where the maps join together, and you can see portal like icons, so it won't be a consistantly flowing world where you see no transisions, you'll go through portals like you did in GW1... kinda disappointing in a way, but meh, it keeps the GW1 feel i suppose, and since everyone can run around, thats still better
