I have the latest version of MM i downloaded it to my new laptop when it downloaded my music files from my old laptop which ran windows xp now only some files will play in windows 8 ?

This could be simply because of extension changes. Windows 8 (the version before Windows 10) - offers multiple channels to play different extensions with different applications.

If you press, your windows key and type "Choose a default app for each type of file" and open the app for that up. You'll notice that you can change related extension types to be played by various software.
