[Help] Computer NIC dropping randomly

So, recently I can't recall when it started but my NIC has been dropping the internet connect to my PC randomly. Normally under any sort of usage, such as browsing imgur, reddit or playing video games.

I'm looking into buying new equipment (dedicated card) but I want to see if I can get this fixed first.
The NIC is connected to the motherboard also, so I don't want to replace the whole thing.

Few things I've tried:

Running Troubleshoot on Windows to detect the problem - it gets fixed by just restarting the device.
Installing older NIC drivers from disk that was provided with my machine than new ones from the internet.

My next go is to see if Windows update has caused it the next time it drops.
Tomorrow I will be getting a ethernet to usb adapter to avoid this because I'm in need of full internet capabilities because I'm connected to the cloud (for my college/video game development).

Any one have any tips that I can do to find and resolve this issue permanently?

is it just the computer which is loosing connection to your internal network or is the internet/router having issues?
do a

Code: Select all

ping -t routerIP
and a

Code: Select all

ping -t localhost
see which drops.

Check cable, check driver is it plugged in? etc......

I hadn't had the chance to do what you mentioned, but what I noticed in my network connection was that it was reaching the router and then dying.

I assumed it was the TP-LINK box that I have setup but all lights was showing green. I came to the conclusion that the cable from my PC to the TP-LINK was the culprit and had it replaced.

Since it's replacement I've not had a single drop. I guess the old CAT-5 cable I was using was dying even though all reports on cable usage showed normal.

sometimes the contacts on the cables can get a bit 'rusty' and stop connecting properly in the socket if the plug isn't a snug fit.

Just out of interest though, are you saying you have an on-board NIC?

Also what TP-LINK router do you have?

I bought one a few years back and it's been the bext £35 I've ever parted with (internet equipment wise anyway :))
Mine is the TD-W8961ND. It's not always had the best reviews, but mainly because it needs someone who knows what they're doing to set it up imo.

The TP-Link that I have isn't failing which is good, the cable that I had connected to it via my PC was the one that was failing. I replaced it with a working cable and haven't experience any dropping.
