Star Wars Galaxies

Post by Nagash »

Someone i used to play Star Wars Galaxies with, back in the days when it used to be good, before they applied the stupid combat and XP shit, when it used to be more of a sandbox mmorpg, sent me the below message...
On 24 June 2011, SOE and LucasArts announced that they had mutually agreed to shut down SWG on 15 December 2011 - :(
So oldish news yeah, but still a sad day when it comes. Might open the way up though for SWG Emu to get a proper release. that version of the game is fan made which they swtched back to the old style SWG, before the combat fix. You need an original disk to play it (can't remember where mine is :(), but now it's closing down, they might eventually make it free to play, could even setup a CiC server if that happened. :D

They are prob shutting it down though ready for the new Star Wars based MMO that comes out, so maybe the close date will match up to the new ones release date.

admittedly it was very grind heavy, but once you had your build it would just be the same as getting max level on any other game in terms of time it took... depending what you did. You could be things like a Dancer, or Musician letting you just go to a cantina and dance or play music, to heal people's death penaulties. it really did have something for everyone, not just combat, and every server was different because players could build their own cities and farms and shops and loadsa shit.

Before you could control everything in the game from the mouse... apart from typing in chat, and therefore you could play one handed... sounds dodgy yeah :D but fact is that when they did the combat fix, they lost around a third of their player base because of the update.... and a quater of those players canceled accounts accounts because they could no longer play the game with only the mouse... seems alot of the disabled community that for one reason or another, could only use one hand, played SWG purely because it was one of the only games they could play... not counting crap like minesweeper of course :D

I played it until not long after Jump to Lightspeed was released

I was a bit hacked off that I had to pay for an addon pack when i was paying subscription...

I had typed a huge thing about how awesome the resource gathering and crafting system was, and that no other mmo has matched it since.

but I left not long after the jedi revamp (the one that basically let any old bastard be a jedi, and so everyone then wanted to be a jedi)

I think I'd said about how copper wasn't just copper - there were multiple (20+) types all with different properties (toughness, conductivity, etc) and also when crafting, sometimes you just needed a 'metal' and you could use any metal, but the item you created would inherit the properties of the mats. so for a blaster pistol you would want conductivity for one part, toughness for another etc.
That was also a cool thing about the crafting, each weapon/armour etc would have multiple parts.
Was pretty extensive and pretty awesome.

I made really good impact weapons as a MWS

I think I went on to babble about how the creature handler was awesome even after it was nerfed to kingdom come and back - being able to tame practically every animal there was for a pet instead of just choosing from 4 or 5 stock choices. (huff-duns were my particular favourite :) ) And also the fact you could have several creatures active at once :D

i liked how the entire game was just sandbox but hated how they changed it to try and make it more main stream. You could go through the entire game without fighting anything, you could even be a dancer as your main profession and not have to worr about levels. it was a little grindy as you had to spend xp to obtain the next tech tree slot, but thats basically what tanks is so it's proved it still works like 10 years on.

i joined about a year before JTL and was a crafter in the city/guild that i was part of, and helped with the layout of the city... which was another great part of the game... you had politics for player generated citys :D. once JTL came out i rerolled and became a guy with the sticky out heads who were starship designers, and i happened to have some old metal i was hording that was the best for making a certain type of armour and was really rare, but it also helped me make the best ship out there across all servers... or at least those that bothered to get involved on the forums :D

then wow came out and killed the population of my server so i lost interest and went back to just TFC.

do you still have the installation disks? it's possible to remake the server but you need a disk to be able to do it.

Yep, I have the 'an empire divided' version

Full box set with 3 CDs, reversible poster of boba fett / darth vader, quick start guide, adventure manual.

I even have the receipt still, but alas it's faded away to blank :(

There's also some random printout that has all the MWS components on it :)

I didn't think you could remake a server from the disks, I thought they were just the client?
I thought that's what swgemu was doing - making a 'fake' server for the client to interract with?
