Re: TF2 Map Building...
what i use is.... http://www.fpsbanana.com/tutcats/206
though tbh, i only use that because i know more of the ins and outs of hammer and i only need generic help topics to tell me how to do TF2 based stuff.
i also use http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Main_Page for more specific info on entities
you should more concern yourself with making just layouts for the moment though. like make a basic room, then 2 rooms with a doorway between them, then make 3 rooms with each room coming off a hallway, then make 4 rooms, with a ramp going upstairs to the other two. with each task, you'll need to add lights for each room and open area's as well as a starting point, "info_player_start" entity.
... entity tool is the light bulb icon, and you select which entity it uses via the drop down list which should appear on the right side. You can click in the camera view where you want the entity to appear, and then adjust it in the 3 plan views.
once you done the above stuff, try making windows in rooms, and then adding a skybox.
mapping can take it's time to get going, and when your making something good, it can take weeks to knuckle down and get it good, but so long as you have an idea set out and you follow it, it will go smoothly.
btw, to play the stuff you make to test it out, go "File > Run Map" then select the "Normal" options, and not the "Full" options.... Normal options will compile crappy ligthting effects, and not good fps, among other stuff, but it'll compile in like seconds, maybe 5mins if it's a big map, but simple tests won't take all of 10seconds.... try a full compile, and a decent sized map can take god knows how long to compile.
main thing to do at the start though is to play around with the main tool icons. you only really need the cursor icon, camera icon, and grey block icon to start out with... you can use the magnafying tool also, but can use the mouse wheel for that... and to change the map grid size, use the [ and ] keys.... snapping to the grid is best
