WON era (1999-2004)
Can I ask do you remember which Servers you used to play in the WON era? Like anything you had played like other clanservers you were in that are now defunct or even Barrysworld? It was a sad loss since Steam killed WON.

Re: WON era (1999-2004)
i assume you mean "which servers", and in that case, yeah i can remember.
Mainly used to play on UK Sutton which i used to admin on. Was only a 12man server but was consistantly full almost 24/7. i was at uni at the time and i remember playing on that server until the stupid hours of the morning.
After that closed down it was Royston Vasey server, or it was called something like that, as some regulars went there, then changed my clan server * into a public server during non-matches which proved quite popular which was called Immortal Respawn. Then my clan merged with a clan ** that was failing to get like 2-3 more decent members so we could be more competitive and not a bottom div clan, and we had a better server used in the same way as the previous one which was called the Sanatarium as my Co-Clan Leader was a big Metalica fan.
* = Clan was [V.O.S] which Ruzyho and Roadster was in, though Roadster was a dual clanner and was in a higher div clan
** = we merged with a clan called =BMW= to become exe. at which time Roadster left and only merced a little for us as he didn't wanna be in two higher div clans.

Re: WON era (1999-2004)
yeah played on uk sutton for ages , was like 5 mins down road from me and my ping was under 200!!!
was in a few clans and went by the name of "Suicid3" or "The Suicide Squad" or some variation of that.
was great fun and when I used to care about stats was only one person who I could not knock of no1
some dude called predator i think it was (mistook him for nag at one point too i think).
He always played heavy and seemed to get most of his rank point when noone was around ^_^.
apart from there played jolts and some rv, oh and the old force9 plusnet servers did all my cs on their cs ones
Good times.

Re: WON era (1999-2004)
predator used to use hax. he had an auto 180 hack and wallhack and would only leave spec when people who weren't in the top 10 or 20 weren't on the server. when i became admin i used to kick him if he was in spec to long as idlers on a 12 person server is gay. but once the server side hack scanning plugin thing came into effect, thats when he got caught. i remember that day cos when it activated loadsa names kept getting highlighted and banned instantly.
just found this on google as well...
http://www.tfcreative.iwarp.com/
, plus since i was the only admin on there ........ ego +10

that quotes like half way down the page, and he fucked up on the ip a little by adding a few numbers at the start, but thats the old UK Sutton IPA decent server which i have found is usually pretty fast, and the admin over there rules... its Uk Sutton TFC

Re: WON era (1999-2004)
Well saddly I didn't play on those IPs you mentioned nor WP. I was mainly in BY cos of my same existing ISP until Richard Branson took over Telewest and its subsidiaries. Hence VM born.
I was also mainly in HomeLAN to avoid any players or hackers with illegal copies of HL1 mods before Steam existed as a non-beta client and had the CD required addon otherwise one that don't have CD inside the drive will be autokicked if my memory is correct 9 years ago.
I remember playing in BY CS 1.3 with FF on and that old Admin-Mod on with only small slots at 16/18... But I kinda preferred BW as they seem to have cool downloads and the site designed like a comical green bank.
And as for WakeNBake that was a random select from the "Quick Start" option for the WON network to find that has the lowest ping and closest to my location. WakeNBake I believe was in Yorkshire (guessing Wakefield) and has limited restrictions like no Minigunners, Soldiers or any heavy classes and snipers, it was mainly for medics, scouts, engineers and flamers. I was in Leyland at that time and I guess the Quick Start gave me the closest and best server for me.
And for FA I played [YIS] located in Topeka, Kansas since 2001 but got kicked from some abusive admins. However at the end I became a member in [YIS] near 2006 as some other admins were a friendly bunch.
By the time Steam came I lost my original account near 2004 as it was hijacked in a dodgy CSS server and VAC failed. I never wanted my recovered account back after it got VACced on most of my owned games.

Re: WON era (1999-2004)
god i hated those servers that demanded your CD to be in the drive with a passion. they were retarded tbh. What if i wanted to listen to music while i played? = Kick. Or what if you don't know it's a CD required server and so you don't put the CD in the drive... like normal sane people
... you have to put the CD in quickly or be kicked, and if you put the CD in, the autostart for HL1 kicks in and forces the game to minimise and due to the old sound bug where if you minimise you lose all your sound, then your forced to play without sound. People might think you could just change server.... but don't forget these were 56k days, the days when you paid per minute to play the game, and there's slow game load up times and slow server connection times. Therefore you suffer the shitness of a shit server mod, or your forced to pay out money because of a shit server mod.
those stupid mods got on my nerves and thats why i stuck to good servers with regular players
