ADSL:-
ADSL generally requires a traditional copper phone line and adapter for pluging your line into a router or modem near your PC and joined with a ethernet wire. The good thing is on ADSL is the dynamic IP and security benefits as your IP will change and cannot be traced, but if you got a home dedicated server then your IP won't remain as it is not static. The problem is with ADSL is using the older technology and does not give you the guaranteed speeds but it can be generally used for small businesses that only use ADSL for general office work and emailling.
Satellite:-
Satellite broadband is a newer type of internet provider where it can be used in both rural or urban areas. Because of the dish that transmit data directly in the atmosphere and provide rapid data exchange and the claimed speeds from the ISP are roughly equal. Of course the drawback on satellite has a common flaw - the weather disruption, in a unsettled environment in a low atmospheric pressure area can interfere with the data exchange and can cut off the connection; just like watching satellite TV with your picture goes fuzzy in a stormy day or night. But that's not the major flaw. The major flaw is the extreme poor latency why? Due to the distance travelled by the signal to/from your computer and the Internet Hub via the satellite, some older satellite technologies exhibited a noticeable lag between communications. Our Satellite Broadband services employ the very latest software and hardware techniques to minimise this lag, including a Performance Enhancing Proxy (PEP) and web acceleration.
Cable/Fiber:-
Most gamers use cable internet because of the reliable line and minimum ping the ISP can offer for the worldwide web. Unlike phone lines, the cable internet have a faster transport data speed. But the fiber optic cable cannot be plugged into your home direct as the router can only port the ordinary cable for the time being. However not all rural areas have a cable coverage and can only use phone or satellite communications. Personally using cable internet offers the best real-time multiplayer activity.

SDSL, T1/N1, Lan, Wan, and all the rest for the people!
oh and you can plug fibre in using media converters which can be like an optical network card but no-one actually allows you to do that except if you pay for circuits or use it internally
nice though - may move thread to the help section as it could be useful for people

Re: ADSL Vs Cable/Fiber Vs Satellite Internet
major difference for ADSL/DSL is DSL(Cable) doesn't degrade in speed over distance
