Wigan's players have pledged to refund the ticket price for any of the club's fans who attended their side's 9-1 thrashing at the hands of Tottenham at White Hart Lane yesterday,

It was the heaviest defeat in Wigan's 31-year history in league football and saw Spurs equal a Premier League scoring record for a single match. Jermain Defoe tied the record of five goals for a player when he put his fifth past Chris Kirkland, including the second-fastest hat-trick in Premier League history. The result also left Wigan with the worst goal difference in the Premier League.

"The club have announced that the players of Wigan Athletic have decided to personally refund every Latics fan who bought a ticket from the DW Stadium ticket office for the match against Tottenham Hotspur," a statement read.

The club captain, Mario Melchiot, insisted that the team will be able to respond to the defeat, but said the fans "must not be taken for granted. We feel that as a group of players we badly let down our supporters yesterday, and this is a gesture we have to make and pay them back for their tremendous loyalty.

"There is not a lot else to say, just that as a group of professionals we were embarrassed by the way we performed, we feel it was below our standards and this is something we feel we owe to the fans. Now we have to draw a line under the game, focus completely on training this week and bounce back on Saturday.

"We are professionals, we will take it on the chin and move on but it's important that we do not take our supporters for granted."

not many that would do something like that, and at £30 a ticket, with 35,650 fans in attendence (though not all will claim back and away fans won't count), thats racking up just under £1million that players are willing to pay out... so respect to wigans players

They played at White Hart Lane and only had around 400 fans attend so they payout isn't mega huge only around £12000 Although its still a nice gesture by the players and they were shocking. Nice to see my team thump them.

yeah i thought was at home at first, though some spurs fan i know said they had about 3000 allocation and won't be that large a figure then, but meh, still nice of their fans

Yeah they had 3000 allocated but Wigan fans don't really travel so only 400 odd tickets actually sold.

yup thats what we wondered in teh pub. There's travel costs, but not only that, there's food and drink costs as well, since can't expect traveling fans not to have a beer and a burger

they are paying for entry fee, thats it, end of the day the fans still got to see a game and wether they lost 9-1 or 1-0 they still watched it, travel costs would never be able to be proven so would be too difficult and im pretty sure the fans fucking loved there food and drink too so why pay that back? no asked them to eat and drink. Just lol at how they can lose to such a shit team so bad :p

teams do travel scheme things for away matches as well, so u could prove that way if they went that way. but like i say, paying for tickets alone is more than most teams would even consider thinking about doing
