Windows 10

Post by red_ned »

Well its here, and i decided to upgrade my 8.1 laptop to 10 so i could see if i want it on my main PC.
The upgrade wouldn't come through on its own so i went and triggered it with a download off the Microsoft website, the download was about 18MB and only an installer so it would have to download the main files for upgrade.
Well after little intervention and about 2 hours sitting in the corner on its own it started speaking to me as it finalised the programs (now called apps).

So i have only played for an hour with it but the start menu is pretty good and overall it doesn't suck balls and i launched tanks and Diablo3 to make sure things were as they should be.

I will add to my review as i get used to it but here are the couple of bad points i have noticed so far:
1. My Asus laptop drivers are really working oddly and i no longer have the smart gesture system working for scrolling etc and cant seem to find out why, plus the mouse is really twitchy in all menus and core M$ programs and some menus wont hold open for use.
2. It shows all my installed programs like it carried them over, however, it didn't! It fakes them being there and launches the installer again if you try to open the program and that means if the installer isnt on your system then its gone.
3. The control panel is really cut down but the godmode hack for win7/8 works still. This does not however make up for the fact the system will only auto update (unless you own the business version).
4. The new browser seems fine except it lost all my favourites and refuses to let me change default search from Bing.
5. The "My Computer" starts in a really weird place and shows all sorts of crap which gets annoying till you find how to turn it all off.

It it is early days so I don't want to judge too much as the install itself was fairly quick and really easy and overall it seems compatible with other programs etc but it does have that subtle hint of windows ME which tried to hide everything from you, but again has a big advantage over windows 8 due to a really nice start button menu.

I will rate it in a week or two once i really know what i am doing.

Day 2->
1. Found a proper control panel but its not in the settings menu!
So the control panel is hidden from general use for no reason, a bit annoying as you cant actually add the real control panel to the start menu instead of the ME style "settings", or i haven't found a way yet.

2. Turned off the new "browser" called "Edge" as it is so intrusive and seems to track everything you do and it misses all the privacy settings like emptying browser history and not tracking etc and will only use Bing, doesn't import favourites and is missing shed loads of functionality you would want from a browser. I only allow windows to open IE 11 now which is as i left it before the upgrade, yes i still use IE due to work etc but also use Chrome and Firefox and Opera.

3. Found the new Asus Smart Gesture program which was released last night and wasn't easy to find - Asus may want to publicise that a bit more but it did fix most of the mouse issues, although it still does sometimes open and close menus very fast and i cant tell if its the mouse pad or windows.

4. Good news the picture library system (you know the image display where you can mouse through all the folder) does now show PNG and GIF properly and even shows animated GIFs and also attempts to show any movies in the same preview although seems to be missing very basic codecs like MP4 so manages about 30% of the time to play.

5. Boot time is definitely longer than windows 8 coming back from sleep or a full restart, i don't know if this eventually gets faster yet like they claimed Vista and Windows 8 do but we will see.

So far it does seem like a mixed bag but i did manage to launch a far few bits and pieces that i had before, although as previously stated i did have to reinstall some of it to get it to work as the program link was actually a link to an installer search.

Testing continues and more to follow

One critical point. When installing, make sure you select 'customize' otherwise it shares everything you do, all your contacts, and probably your bank details to Microsoft.....who will probably use it for targeted marketing and share it with everyone else.

Once installed, go to settings/privacy, and turn all that crap off. Also, the voice activation thing 'Cortana', shares a helluva lot of stuff too.

I guess you're familiar to Reddit and every other page that "considers" Microsoft 10 to be Spyware.
If you've read the entire privacy policy, everyone is up in arms according too one sentence, but it only applies to OneDrive.

Everything else, Microsoft couldn't give a shit about. As long as it's not in your OneDrive, Microsoft has no access too.

Cortana can be used locally too, nothing you do on your computer towards Cortana is sent to Microsoft. Turn off your location data and see for your self that the software forgets who you are.

This was due to phased released. You would be seeing your computer update in 3-7 months. As long as you reserved your installation, it may be quicker. Minimum 3 months, due to UK release.
2. It shows all my installed programs like it carried them over, however, it didn't! It fakes them being there and launches the installer again if you try to open the program and that means if the installer isnt on your system then its gone.
Using the Upgrade option clears your Registry data, which means that your data-stored for installation paths have been removed.
This means that when loading and clicking your games may require your game to "reinstall" or "find" the path of installations.
4. The new browser seems fine except it lost all my favourites and refuses to let me change default search from Bing.
The new browser is no longer what others consider as "Internet Explorer". It is freshly built from the ground and many of those who use Internet Explorer on either an upgrade or clean install of Windows 10 will have all their data lost. Default search can be changed by clicking ... button in Microsoft Edge and locating "Advance Options", Add new to "Search in the address bar with" to your favourite searching tool.
really nice start button menu.
Did you know you can also scale your start menu in size too? :)

My views on Windows 10,
Upgraded for the pc at the weekend, not totally impressed with it to be honest,
I have had more issues with the computer crashing, randomly losing the speaker/headset sound where i have to restart and it magically reappears.
Have to restart the computer at least 2 times a day if not more after crashes etc.
It hates the sleep option so never properly switches back on which then results in a restart.

Its easy enough to use i got the hang of it very easily found the settings and control panel easily enough,
Got rid of cortana being on the task bar as it was doing my head in, Luckily did not have to reinstall anything as it all carried over from win 7 which was alright.
I do still think theres a lot that can be improved and will soldier on with this but hey ho

Nope, wrong, it's because Microsoft are bad at what they do.

The computer i'm currently using at work (and using to post on now) has never had any Windows 10 update messages, no reservation copy requests, no nothing. We don't want this computer updating because it's got some stuff on it that would be difficult to replace but thats not the point, if it was a computer being used for normal use it wouldn't be updated to Windows 10 without alot of effort on the users part... it gets normal standard updates and everything, just nothing to do with Windows 10

Result = Microsoft Bad/Shit/Crap/etc.

I will likely install it on my home computer soon though, just get it over and done with. I hate though how they feel they need to make everything app based and mobile device like. I prefer the setup of Windows 7, seems a shame to have to change, but will have to change eventually, so seems stupid to delay it.

Installed on 6 computers at work, each one being used in a number of ways and not restricted to bog standard usage.

One thing to make sure of is you update your Java regularly as there have been a number of updates sent through.
We went through a phase of a Windows 10 update every other night, now it's slowed down.

Overall I like it :-)
